Reduce image file size for free

Reduce an image's file size before you download it. Takes PNG, JPEG, WebP and AVIF, animated GIF, and HEIC photos from a phone.

By default every image keeps the format it arrived in. Choose Auto pick and the tool picks the output format for you: an image with a lot of edge detail — a photograph — becomes WebP, and anything else is left as it is. An image with transparency that would otherwise become JPEG becomes PNG instead. You can also choose the format and the quality yourself.

Up to 50 images at a time, 25 MB each. Images carry over between tools, so all of them share that count of 50. There is also a pixel ceiling that depends on the device — between 12 and 20 megapixels — and an image above it is scaled down to fit rather than turned away.

How to use it

  1. Drop the images you want to compress, or pick them.
  2. Keep the default settings, or choose the format and quality yourself.
  3. Check the result and download it.

What it is for

  • Making images lighter for a website or blog
  • Fitting an email or messenger attachment limit
  • Shrinking an animated GIF
  • Shrinking many photos at once

Common questions

Can it handle animated images?
Yes. Animated GIF and animated WebP both stay animated, and you can write the result as either one. There is a frame ceiling, though — between 200 and 600 frames depending on the device. Past that the job fails rather than quietly dropping frames.
Do my images get uploaded?
No. The compression runs in your browser, and your images are never sent to a server.
What about HEIC photos from a phone?
They work as input. Your browser turns a HEIC into a PNG working copy the moment it arrives, so what gets compressed is that copy — nothing here writes HEIC back out. A browser that cannot decode HEIC turns the file away.
